The European Parliament the world’s - only directly elected legislature at the supranational level – is an established body that is directly accountable to the citizens of the EU, and EU citizens now possess extensive political and civil Democratic legitimation of EU economic governance: challenges and opportunities for European Legislatures. These democratic principles also shape the normative benchmarks used to evaluate legitimacy, thus preventing a ‘de-democratisation’ of legitimation discourses. This essay examines the difficulty of defining and addressing the question of the democratic legitimacy in the EU. It examines the role of the national parliaments in the treaties and explores ways in which they can contribute to improving that legitimacy.
